Description:

A UV aging test chamber is a specialized piece of equipment used in laboratories to simulate the effects of long-term exposure to UV radiation on materials, products, and samples. The chamber exposes the test sample to controlled amounts of UV radiation, simulating the effects of prolonged exposure to sunlight or other sources of UV radiation. UV aging test chambers are used in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, and construction, to test the durability and performance of materials under UV exposure.

There are several different types of fluorescent UV lamps that have unique spectral characteristics. Fluorescent black lights, referred to as UV-A lamps, are available with peak emissions of 340 nm – 370 nm (e.g., UVA-340 and UVA-351). In the UVA-340 lamp, the short wavelength irradiance simulates that of direct solar radiation below 325 nm. Fluorescent UV-B lamps (UVB-313), with a peak around 313 nm, have nearly all of their energy concentrated between 280 nm and 360 nm. A large percentage is at wavelengths shorter than what is present in natural sunlight. There is very little radiation with wavelengths longer than 360 nm. Reversals in the stability ranking of materials have often been reported between laboratory accelerated and outdoor tests when the accelerated test uses UV-B lamps. This occurs because of the large amount of short wavelength UV and the lack of long wavelength UV and visible radiation; the mechanisms of degradation may be significantly different from those of the “natural” tests.
